Chapter Sixteen

Jo headed across the city to the bar where Dori had said she was. She didn’t know whether she wanted to kill her sister, or pledge her undying thanks. What the actual fuck had she been thinking making out with Van Ignes? Almost kissing him when they were at the caterers had been bad enough. Actually, kissing him in the office, climbing on top of him and devouring him, was way worse. She must be insane. Frustration flipped in her belly, or nerves. Or... butterflies? She groaned and tapped at the steering wheel of her car.

She turned onto S. 18th street toward the bar as flashes of his soft, strong lips on hers plagued her mind. Stupid. Really fucking stupid. She pulled into a lot a couple blocks from the bar and parked. Why had she come to the rescue, again? Because you’re a glutton for punishment. Or maybe it was because she had needed an excuse to get away from Spencer and his bright blue eyes and hotter than hell hands that had been roaming all over her body. But yeah, mostly it was because Dori needed her. Like always.

She straightened her blouse again, trying to dispel thoughts of Spencer and the blush that came with them. She didn’t need Dori to ask why her clothes were a mess, or what the hell she’d been doing to get them that way. She was having a hard-enough time trying to figure out what had possessed her to kiss Spencer, push him back on the couch, and mount him like that. She hadn’t wanted that kind of contact in so long, the rush of feelings through her body had been electric, if foreign.

Her heels clicked on the sidewalk as she walked toward the bar. Dori could have met her at the lot, but that wasn’t Dori’s style. And truthfully, Jo was glad not to see her sister standing alone in the lot, drunk and vulnerable. The street got busier as she neared the bar. It was lateish, but downtown was hopping. She strode into the bar, leaving thoughts of Spencer outside, and tried to locate Dori.

What the hell?

Dori was at the bar, and she didn’t look very drunk. Or like she was in need of a rescue from a creeptastic date. In fact, Ruth was sitting next to her. Ruth hated the bar scene. Her sisters were rarely seen together in such a calm state. Her stomach flipped. What the hell was wrong?

She rushed forward. “Dori? Ruth?”

They turned to face her, glanced up and down at her outfit, and both grinned wildly. Okay, so no one was dead. Her breath left her in a rush. Thank God.

“Happy birthday!” they both yelled.

“What?” It was not her birthday. Fuck. Was it?

Dori’s laugh was loud, even in the crowded bar. “Seriously?”

Jo bit her bottom lip and shrugged.

“You have no idea it’s your birthday, do you?” Dori demanded.

“Er, no, I guess not.”

“It’s written all over your face.” Dori snorted.

“Dor, be nice,” Ruth said, sliding off the bar stool and opening her arms for a hug.
